Travelogue: Day 1 in the Belum Rainforest Resort

The Belum Rainforest Resort is located Pulau Banding, right in the heart of the Belum-Temengor forest complex. If you look at the map of the Peninsula Malaysia, you will find it in the Northern Central part of the Peninsula Malaysia bordering South Thailand and Kelantan.

The Belum –Temengor  Tropical Rainforest is huge and encompasses of 300,000 hectares  and it is four times the size of Singapore. It should also be the pride of our nation as this rainforest has been in existence for over a 130 million years, making it the oldest rainforest in the world, much older than the Amazon and even the Congo!!

My trip to the Belum Rainforest Resort took about 5 hours 15 minutes . We travelled to the royal town of Kuala Kangsar which took us about 3 hours and 15 minutes and another 2 hours from Kuala Kangsar to Gerik and the rainforest… You can also make the journey from Penang in about 3 hours plus or Kelantan in about 2 hours….

Pulau Banding is one of the largest islands smacked in the middle of the Tasik Temengor, which is a manmade lake that overs 15,200 hectares of the forest. The lake was made in 1974, when Malaysia’s second Prime Minister, Tun Abdul Razak, resourcefully flooded the valleys of the Upper Perak River and its tributaries to create a dam that would generate hydro-electric power and at the same time stopping communist terrorists from infiltrating Malaysian borders from their Southern Thailand bases.

It is said that there used to be people who lived in those valleys and they were naturally evacuated. However, there was not enough time to evacuate all their belongings and machinery, so we do actually have a kind of a “lost world of atlantis” thingie going on under the lake….

We got to the beautiful resort on Pulau Banding and had our lunch at the Hornbill Restaurant.

My daughter decided to have a plate of Char Hor Fun, while I decided on the Spaghetti Bolognese.

Once everyone’s appetite was sated, we went on a little tour around the resort, to check out the lovely infinity pool and the different rooms and villas there were available…

Almost all the rooms and the Villas made us go “wahhhh” because they were just simply so exquisite, each one even more so then the first one…from the Deluxe suites to the Traditional Chalets called Tualang and Meranti to the 10 room Tanjung Wan Villa and the gorgeous and magnificent 3 room Santubong Royal Villa… The Tanjung Wan Villa and Santubong Royal Villa were really exquisite with an air of decadence…

When our little tour was over, we headed back to our rooms to rest before dinner. We then had a sumptuous dinner at the Hornbill Restaurant before meeting up Desmond, our tour guide who took us on our Night Trekking.

It was a nice little walk with torchlights lighting our way as we took a little stroll checking out the Gaharu trees, as well as learning a bit more about some plants and insects.

We did not get to see any wildlife, as Desmond warned us the animals would have bolted when they sense us coming, but we did see a giant millipede, a spider and got a good exercise…

When it was over, we headed back to our rooms to catch up on some very much needed sleep….

And that was the end of Day 1…..For more pictures click here pls…
