The story of Kuala Lumpur began back in the 1850s when tin ore was found at the confluence of the Klang and Gombak Rivers, the place where the Masjid Jamek (Jamek Mosque) is located currently in KL. Kuala Lumpur was practically built on blood, sweat, tears, and hopes of the immigrants and those living there….
The Kafe old Market Square is located right next to the river. It is right at the front of the Avenue J Hotel and Malaysian Bar Council, where the buses which passes by Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman will stop.. It used to be named Sin Seng Nam , founded in 1928 by a Hainanese immigrant Choong Yoo Ting and his two brothers and was where civil servants, judges, lawyers and people from all walks of life, and if you look further back in history, miners and gamblers came to have their meal….
Sin Seng Nam was famous back then not just as place to savour a favourite brew but also a place to meet friends, conduct business, relax and enjoy life
Sin Seng Nam closed shop in mid 2013 to the disappointment of its loyal customers, after 85 years of being in business… Time had taken its toll on the building and extensive refurbishment was required to restore this heritage building to its former glory.
The colonial-style, three-story corner shoplot was reopened in April 2014, as Kafé Old Market Square. Datuk Ghani Abdullah, who had been a customer and loved the place bought it and had it painstakingly restored as a kopitiam….
AboutKL /Tourism Malaysia brought me and my blogger/ social media influencer friends here for a very filling and satisfying breakfast and we got to try out the yummy dishes there…
The café serves up a very satisfying Malaysian local breakfast of Hainanese coffee, soft-boiled eggs and kaya toast the exact same way it did years and years ago.
There is also some yummy Nasi Lemak Ayam Goreng rempah with fluffy coconut rice and nicely fried spiced chicken….
…Yong Tau Foo, and delicious Mee Rebus and Rojak Pasembur with squid…
…and do try out the Meehoon Mee Hailam…
You can actually get the food cheaper at a discounted price if you order the food as a set online via the Amaxmall …
Historical places gives me a warm fuzzy feeling of having being able to step back into time a little….And I loved the opportunity and feeling of being there in such a gorgeous place… naturally there is also a sense of contentment and pride since it is in my own country…
Datuk Ghani has done an amazing job having the original wall tiles and mosaic floors scrubbed clean, and acquiring antique pictures/ photographs that is hung on the walls tastefully and you will definitely love checking out this spacious gallery space on the 1st floor of the café…
You will be able to see the fine Dutch gables, yellow shutters and high glassless windows of the building as you approach the building or pass by it… and it is said to be one of three shophouses built by tin magnate Loke Yew back in 1906….
Kafe Old Market Square is halal so Muslims can come here to eat with no worries and I think this is one of the places you can find all races in Malaysia sitting down to eat in harmony…. I love the food and the ambiance of this heritage café and will be back for more….
You can take any buses from Gombak, Kepong, Selayang, Rawang and stop right here or you can also take the LRT to the Masjid Jamek or Pasar Seni stop and walk a little to get here..

This looks very Chinese + Colonial but surprisingly owned by Malay. This is what I love about Malaysia. Haven’t been there yet, and I should. Loving the Malaysian dishes served, based on your photos.
