Sunway Malls decided to gather together to do a grand Lunar New Year launch recently at the newly opened Sunway Velocity Mall. This would be the first time all the malls are launching the Lunar New Year collectively as Sunway Malls but well it was interesting, and definitely a great idea as it is time saving and also cost saving… and this new strategy better reflects the growth and positioning of Sunway Malls as a group of malls with 20 years of experience.
Sunway Velocity Mall, opened just a month ago, has received a tremendous visitors and this demonstrates the strength of the Sunway Malls brand. Sunway Malls has grown in leaps and bounds over the years…
The celebration began with a performance by an illusionist, who then invited HC Chan, CEO of Sunway Malls & Theme Parks and Kevin Tan, COO of Sunway Malls to place the final brush stroke on a giant fan. Phang Sau Lian, General Manager of Sunway Putra Mall; Danny Lee, General Manager of Sunway Velocity Mall; Albert Cheok, Centre Manager of Sunway Giza; and Dato’ Aishaf Falina, Company Director of Sunway Velocity Mall are then invited to the stage to officiate the event together.
During the launch, Sunway Malls pledged to give away 15,000 items to various old folks homes with every redemption made by shoppers. The items such as toiletries, towels, bags, first aid kit, non-perishable food and more will be packed into festive gift packs to be given away to each of the old folks.
The redemptions are available at Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Putra Mall and Sunway Velocity Mall during the festive campaign period.

5 DIFFERENT LUNAR NEW YEAR ATTRACTIONS UNDER SUNWAY MALLS
Sunway Velocity Mall’s Lunar New Year for example, is themed “Winds of Prosperity”. Decorated with colourful, different sized fans designed with traditional Chinese motifs, the décor aims at representing movement and fluidity, symbolizing the fanning of prosperity and fortune to the surrounding area of Cheras. A flower market offering a wide range of orchids, pussy willow, lucky bamboo, bonsai, succulents, cactus, chrysanthemums and many more, is another attraction, especially for those looking forward to decorating their homes.
Throughout its Chinese New year celebrations, Sunway Velocity Mall will be hosting acrobatic lion dances, heart-thumping 12-ensemble drum performances, amazing mask changing acts, fun Chinese Yo-Yo stunts, as well as resounding performances by the Yamaha orchestra. There will also be free children’s workshops happening every weekend, where kids will have a fun time exploring their creativity through oriental craft classes and activities.
To further add to the festive atmosphere, the God of Fortune will be travelling through Sunway Velocity Mall every weekend and shoppers in his path will receive angpow packets with surprise gifts. A Golden Rooster ticket will be hidden in some of the angpows and lucky shoppers with the ticket will win SK Jewellery’s 999 Pure Gold Tsum Tsum Prosperity Coin Angpow.
At Sunway Pyramid, the mall uses a cheeky Cantonese phrase to usher in the new year. The phrase “Mai Zao Gai” (咪走鸡), which means, “do not let great bargains or opportunities run away”, led the mall to kick off the new year by rewarding shoppers with deals galore.
Hence, the mall’s friendly mascot, Leo the Lion, will be dressed up in his Fortune Rooster outfit and those who can catch him will get to enjoy exclusive discounts at participating stores during the Rush Hour promotions. This signifies a sweet beginning that comes with the hopes and blessings that the rest of the year will be smooth and prosperous for all.
Following the Cantonese phrase, the décor in Sunway Pyramid is inspired by the streets of 1970s Hong Kong. Inspired by the classic multi-level retail shops as well as Chinese signages, the LG2 Orange Concourse is decorated up to 4-storeys high with structures of shops and a theatre that resembles the yesteryears. A giant 14-feet rooster is placed on the rooftop whilst shoppers can have fun taking pictures with a smaller 8-feet rooster on the ground.
There is also a complimentary Photo Booth area featuring a traditional Chinese medicine store set up for shoppers to take as many pictures as they want. Hanging red lanterns complement the entire Concourse, along with stalls selling beard candy, traditional candies, calligraphy, customised stamps and traditional costumes. Shoppers can also enjoy lion dance performances on certain weekends at the Concourse, or breathe in the joy of spring amidst the beautiful flower blossoms for a flourishing New Year at the Spring Flower Market at the LG2 Blue Concourse.
Also going back in time, Sunway Putra Mall’s décor is inspired by the ancient charm of the grand Shanghai Town.
Themed ‘The Splendour of Spring’, the mall creates a rustic, yet exclusive setting that showcases a Shanghai town. Visitors will be awed by the amazing replicas of shop houses and theatre stage that was inspired from when the east met west era in the 1930’s, oriental decorations and even a wishing tree that stands tall at the Main Concourse, cleverly used to decorate and emanate the ambiance of that era.
Shoppers can also get acquainted with New Year essentials at their Chinese New Year bazaar and whilst going about festive shopping, shoppers get to enjoy 2 hours of FREE parking with any spending in the mall.
The merriment of Sunway Putra Mall includes the appearances of the God of
Prosperity and Shanghai Lady on weekends as they make their rounds distributing prosperity goodies. There are also Chinese Paper Cutting Art workshops, traditional lion dance performances and more on weekends and public holidays.
On top of that, Sunway Putra Mall will be hosting a Veteran Singing Competition on the 22 January and other entertainments throughout the festive season such as Jessy Chung’s Promo Tour as well as Nick and Stella’s Meet and Greet Session for the duet’s Chinese New Year’s Album.
In Kota Damansara, Sunway Giza is abuzz with weekend bazaars and a Lunar New Year fair. Activities such as Calligraphy contest, Greeting Card Making contest, God of Prosperity Walkabout and lion dance performances will be in place to hype up the festivity amongst the community. Shoppers can browse through selections of cookies, hampers, clothes, festive décor for the home and more at the bazaar.
Over in Penang, Sunway Carnival Mall has set up a propitious fortune walk in the mall with various auspicious ornaments, in line with their theme “Jin Yu Man Tang” (金玉满堂), which means “may fortune be with you”. The Upper Ground Concourse is decorated with traditional Chinese architectural arches, lime trees, breaming red lanterns, gold coins, and a customised God of Prosperity sitting majestically in the heart of the Concourse to evoke good fortune.
Penangites can also enjoy single mask changing performances, Chinese orchestra, 3D paper-craft workshops, calligraphy demonstrations, stage magic and God of Prosperity walkabouts in the mall. Shoppers who spend RM188 and above (RM128 for HSBC cardholders) in 2 receipts will be rewarded with angpow packets whilst those who spend RM488 and above (RM388 for HSBC cardholders) in 2 receipts will be rewarded with an exclusive porcelain teapot set.
