Nando’s Malaysian Grillers’ Challenge 2017

Have you ever imagine how it is like being a Nando’s Malaysian Griller… I did not think too much about it until I was given a chance to go into one of Nando’s kitchen and try my hand being a Nando’s chicken griller…


There was definitely a few steps in cleanliness, chicken handling, then you are required to grill the chicken and baste it evenly before serving it up…

The story of Nando’s began in a little Johannesburg suburb in South Africa in 1987, with all the passion for Portuguese-inspired flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken.  Nando’s opened its first restaurant in Kuala Lumpur back in 1998 and has since been grilling Malaysian’s taste buds until it is now home to 73 Nando’s restaurants across various states, best known for its legendary and delicious flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken. At Nando’s, customers are surrounded with warmth, hospitality and fun, whilst enjoying a meal to remember.

Anyway, the annual Nando’s Malaysian Grillers’ Challenge is back for the 6th year and kicks-off in full swing as the men and women behind the delicious flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken challenge each other for the coveted title of Best Malaysian Griller.


This year, the top three winners of the national competition will represent Malaysia on the world stage at The Nando’s International Grillers’ Challenge 2017 set to take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, the home country of Nando’s.

Our Malaysian grilling experts will be pitted against a host of top grillers from around the globe such as the UK, USA, Australia, the UAE and much more.

The national competition will see the most fiery grillers from over 73 Nando’s restaurants across various states in Malaysia put their skills to the test to produce the most succulent PERi-PERi chicken this September 2017.

“The Nando’s Grillers’ Challenge has been a fantastic way for Nando’s restaurants across the globe to ensure that Nando’s dishes being served to its loyal customers meet the exceptionally high standards that Nando’s is renowned for, ensuring that customers can expect only the best quality, perfectly cooked chicken meal each time they dine at a Nando’s restaurant, no matter where in the world they are,” said Stephen Chew, CEO of Nando’s Malaysia.

The competition’s judging criteria follows a strict system consisting of 4 main areas; Griller’s Appearance, Hygiene & Preparation of the chickens, Front Grill & Final Cooking as well as Taste & Presentation.

With ‘People’ being a key factor in the Nando’s world, this competition aims to give recognition to their most dedicated grillers, who are responsible for firing up the amazing flame-grilled PERi-PERi chickens loved by many. The representatives from each country receives not only glory, but also gets to enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime experiential trip to the host country of the competition where they meet other grillers sharing the same passion. Beyond the competition, it is a chance for the grillers to bond with the bigger Nando’s family whilst experiencing personal growth as well as career growth.


“Here at Nando’s we have a saying – Nando’s is not just about the chicken, but the people who make the chicken. The grillers play a huge role in delivering the product aspect of every customer’s Nando’s experience, hence we want them to feel that they are important members of the Nando’s family. They are the heroes behind the grill, and without the shared passion for PERi-PERi igniting in our bones, Nando’s would not be able to achieve what it has today,” added Chew.

And oh yes, did you know, Nando’s is also on the search to recruit some people who truly enjoy Nando’s flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken to join the ranks as a taste judge. Called the ‘Chicken Expert’ competition, the competition is open to the general public to identify the most qualified Nando’s chicken expert based on an interactive online interview.

The successful ‘Chicken Expert’ will then not only go on to join Stephen Chew, who will be leading the brood at the finals as a taste judge, but also win a trip for two to the land of PERi-PERi – South Africa. Those who believe they have what it takes will need to log onto to participate. What are you waiting for… I am so trying my knowledge and luck here…
