Fine Dining at the Colonial Cafe, The Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur

Stepping foot in the Colonial Café the Majestic Wing of The Majestic Hotel KL is like stepping back into time, back to the halcyon days of the planters of Malaya. Plush red leather chairs, crisply starched white tablecloths and timber panelling reinforce the colonial feel as well as exudes elegance and that colonial feeling…

The cuisine served at the Colonial Café is an amazing fusion of cultures with top Hainanese chefs recreating classic British as well as Hainanese dishes for the colonists, using local ingredients and familiar cooking techniques, prompted the consequential fusion which is just as much a part of Malaysia’s heritage…

The Bar is a lovely place where you can imbibe in a drink or two just like the planters back in the Colonial era with a gorgeous gold-leafed domed ceiling which was an original feature of the historical original hotel.

Just like every other inch of the gorgeous Majestic Hotel Kuala Lumpur, you’ll be surrounded by elegance and also have a reverent feeling one feels visiting anywhere historical, such as olden day palaces, castles etc… well, at least, that is how I personally feel whenever I visit gorgeous places steeped in history..

Anyway my mini me, who is well, my BFF as well as my partner in crime most of the time was sat down for a fine dining dinner at the Colonial Café…

Colonial Café offers classic colonial dishes such as Hainanese chicken chop, prawn cocktail, mulligatawny soup as well as stir fried bee hoon, or stir fried beef koay teow with ginger..

Waited on by smartly clad cream, white and black uniformed servers, I decided to order the Colonial Sampler (RM180 per person) for my mini me, who is a junior wannabe gastronomic connoisseur, consisting of an Amuse Bouche  – Hainanese Chicken Rice Ball; a Starter – the Classic Prawn Cocktail; a Soup – Traditional Hainanese Boiled Beef Soup; a Mid Course – Hainanese Chicken Chop;  a Main dish –  the Baked Honey-Glazed Cod Fish and a Dessert – a lovely plate of English Trifle…

The Amuse Bouche – The aromatic hand – pressed Hainanese Chicken Rice Ball was just one ball with garnishing, and even before I got the chance to try it, my little junior wannabe gastronomic connoisseur have already gobbled it saying it was nice…

The Starter came next, the Classic Prawn Cocktail, with freshly shredded lettuce, chopped cucumber and small sized prawns covered with slightly spicy cocktail sauce served in a cocktail glass with a little lemon wedge on the side…it is said to be a popular British hors d’oeuvre, especially from the 1960s to the 1980s..

The Soup was a Traditional Hainanese Boiled Beef Soup which tasted pleasant just on its own, but if you like your broth more spicy like my mini me and me, add the chili paste that comes with it for that extra ummpphh..

After the soup, came our Mid Course, a lovely plate of Hainanese Chicken Chop (RM80 if you order it on its own on a normal portion).. Almost everyone knows that the Hainanese people makes the most delicious Hainanese Chicken Chop, and well, this was no different, except for the over generous helping of garden peas for people who do not eat peas.. hahaha…. The chicken is cracker-crumbed and deep fried, and it is served with hand-cut fries and comes with tangy spiced onion-gravy…

The Main Course was my favorite, since well, my daughter and I loved the fish… it was Baked Honey-Glazed Cod Fish (RM140 if you order it on its own on a normal portion). The fish was fresh, flaky and moist with the most yummy sauce… and served with crispy battered onion rings and butter-glazed asparagus.

For Dessert, it was English Trifle (RM45 if you order it on its own on a normal portion), a Vanilla Infused Sponge Cake with custard and red currant jelly…a perfect ending to a great meal…

Besides that, I also ordered some extras for myself..

A Hot Starter consisting of a Baked Seafood Crab Shell (RM55), which was a lovely combination of crab meat, shrimp, snapper, salmon mixed with seasoned breadcrumbs and cheesy mushroom sauce all in a huge crab shell..  it was definitely yummy…

And a Main Dish – the Angus Beef Fillet (RM190), this dish was oh really almost orgasmic…with seared foie gras –my daughter did not like this though.. hahah, the beef fillet was juicy, perfectly cooked and presented on toasted brioche with roasted button mushroom, baby carrots and asparagus…

I completed my meal with a refreshing glass of Iced Caffe Latte (RM25)..

We dined to soothing music created by some descendants of the legendary Maestro Alfonso Soliano, a family whose musical traditions are entrenched in the nation’s history perform who entertained us from their spot below the golden dome..

My verdict – you really should bring your loved ones or special someone or those you want to impress here to dine. The food is great, and so is the atmosphere, admittedly it is kinda pricey, but well, if you want to dine in style, and experience great food in a gorgeous setting and ambience, you have to pay.. This is said with the memory of my daughter and I having to pay about RM60 for just a small pot of  Jasmine tea in an almost run down antique tea house in the Summer Palace grounds in Beijing a couple of years ago…
