I first tried Costa Coffee at the outlet at the Beijing Capital International Airport at the Departure hall, while waiting for the time I could check in and board my flight back to Kuala Lumpur and it had won my heart over then because of the fragrant coffee…
… and now, two year later, Europe’s best loved coffee shop and the second largest coffee brand in the world, Costa Coffee, announced the launch of its self-serve offering in Malaysia following a successful trial with partner, Shell.
Costa Coffee is planning an initial roll out of 200 locations across Shell Select stores over the next 12 months, with many more to follow with their state-of-the-art self-serve coffee offering which was designed by luxury Italian design house Pininfarina, famous for designing the classic Ferrari.
Each self-serve location serves Costa Coffee’s signature blend, Mocha Italia, freshly ground for every cup served. Boasting an impressive over 200 combinations, the opportunity to customise a drink is endless; from adding fresh milk, to selecting indulgent flavoured syrups.
Coffee lovers in Malaysia will enjoy a Costa Coffee world exclusive; the introduction of an iced drink range from Costa Coffee self-serve for the first time ever, and yes, you really, really, really have to try it… it is literally almost heavenly – even Shairan Huzani Husain, the Managing Director of Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd and Shell Timur Sdn Bhd said so at the launch…
Costa Coffee has been at the forefront of better coffee experiences since it was founded in 1971. Passionate about introducing great coffee to customers globally, the launch of self-serve offering in Malaysia reaffirms the brand’s commitment to inspire and excite its customers.
The launch was an amazing success with members of the media being ferried by a Costa Coffee double decker bus to the Shell Petrol Station/ Select Store which has been beautifully decorated to resemble a London Park, with English styled snacks like fish and chips, shepherds pie, sandwiches, scones, pies, savories served along with Costa Coffee and Costa Strawberry and Vanilla Milk and also beautifully designed English themed cupcakes…
There were lovely backdrops for photo opportunities as well as coffee caricatures by some talented artists as well as some buskers entertaining the guests at the ‘London Park’ lawn…
Scott Martin, Managing Director at Costa Express (trading as Costa Coffee in Malaysia) said: “We are delighted to extend our global presence with our launch in Malaysia, a dynamic, desirable and thriving country with an established coffee culture. The scale of Shell in Malaysia, as well as our well established multi-market partnership gave us the ideal platform from which to roll out our brand. Through our partnership with Shell and our world-leading on-the-go proposition, we will transform customer perception about the quality of on-the-go coffee available in Shell Select stores, just as we did in the UK, increasing the appeal of Shell sites to their customers and giving customers more reasons to visit more often.”
Shairan Huzani Husain, the Managing Director of Shell Malaysia Trading Sdn Bhd and Shell Timur Sdn Bhd said: “Shell places customers at the heart of everything we do, and our retail mission is to make their life’s journeys better by giving them one less worry on the road. We’re continuously upgrading our stores to include a food oasis so our customers can have a better retail experience on-the-go. Our food oasis offers quality pastries from deli2go that are baked fresh in-store every day, alongside other options from local and international food & beverage providers.”

I’ve spotted Costa overseas but haven’t personally tried it. Friends in the UK have also raved about it but I am not so much a coffee drinker. Perhaps now that they are available in Malaysia, it is time for me to give it a try.
