TROPICAL SPICE GARDEN, TELUK BAHANG, PENANG

I have passed the Tropical Spice Garden in Penang countless times, but have never quite step foot in it until my most recent trip to Penang, and I realized what I have been really missing out on…

Another little piece of paradise.. and I really mean it.. Penang’s Tropical Spice Garden is an eight-acre collection of secondary jungle where you can discover and find about 500 species of flora and fauna.

This is Southeast Asia’s only tropical spice garden and I am telling you it is such an amazing place good place to spend the morning or afternoon.

Located on the left side of the road on your way up from Batu Ferringhi to Teluk Bahang, you probably won’t miss the purple signages on each side of the entrance..

For RM 29.00 for an adult or RM17.00 for children, you will get a hand held audio guide where you can press the button to wherever you are and listen to the information given on the plants you encounter. Before starting on the tour, you’ll be offered natural citronella oil so that you can apply on yourself to avoid pesky ants, flies, mosquitoes and other insects from making your visit a nightmare…

Naturally, you can opt to go on a guided tour for RM49.00. My daughter and I decided to set out on an ‘adventure’ by ourselves… and believe me, after about 20-30 steps, you might just forget you were actually just in Penang.

Surrounded by lush greenery and mother nature, it is just so calming and refreshing being away from the concrete jungle and smog. The plant names are nicely labeled and numbered for you to check out on your audio guide. The handheld audioguide which comes with a lanyard for you to loop around your neck explains about the area, and plants in a clear and interesting manner.

Right at the beginning of my adventure, there’s a pond with giant round water lilies leaves, fishes swimming in between the reeds and other lotuses..

My mini me and I somehow found ourselves at the Spice Terraces and marvel at the many plants that produce the myriad of spices and herbs there and into the Perfume Garden where the air was scented with sweet florals…from the Ylang ylang and Jasmine flowers…

From there we manage to head to the Bamboo Garden and Tea kiosk where we got to try out some hot Misai Kuching tea there before heading further in… ok, have to admit I was sad I could not find a Penang version of the Arashiyama Bamboo Groves, but nevertheless, it was pretty enough..

We wandered further up the hill and found ourselves in a scary place where we tried avoiding touching anything at all… hahah… well… it was the Poison Garden with all those dangerous plants, some which look so pretty and innocuous and which comes with certain medicinal benefits but still so toxic if incorrectly used..

We manage to find the foot reflexology path as well before heading to Beverages of the World and into the Gift Shop where we returned our handheld audio guides…

Outside the gift shop, we were mesmerized by the Silverleaf Monkeys that were frolicking there on the roof of the Cooking School and the Gift Shop before finding our way out of the garden..

However we headed right back in to the Heart of the Garden where we had missed and my daughter took a little ride on the Giant Swing there before we decided to finish our adventure there…

It is definitely a priceless experience getting to enjoy getting up close with nature and all those amazing and intriguing flora and fauna that made a difference in our lives in many ways…

The Tropical Spice Garden is a perfect venue for an intimate gathering, it would be nice to have a nice garden wedding here, maybe some company team-building for companies and also maybe a school reunion for old friends or so on…

Don’t forget to check out the souvenirs, the many spices as well as exclusively designed T-shirts, stationery, toiletries and spa products for sale at the gift shop…

You can get on the No. 102 Rapid Penang (Airport – Teluk Bahang – Airport) and No. 101 Rapid Penang (Weld Quay – Teluk Bahang – Weld Quay) buses from town or if you are lazy, get a Grab car there…

Thank you Tropical Spice Garden for kindly hosting me… my reviews are strictly my own opinions…
