EAT, TRAVEL, WRITE 6.0 – 5 Places to Eat…

We indulged our taste buds during the recent Eat Travel Write 6, Selangor’s International Culinary Adventure… well, as the media familiarisation trip already mentions… eat… and so yes, we ate.. and our taste buds and stomachs were definitely happy… Anyway, here are 5 places we went on this edition of Eat Travel Write 6.0 which is around the Ulu Kelang to Bangi and Dengkil area…the area focused on this edition of  ETW6.0

The Garage KL

The Garage KL was definitely an interesting place, being an open-air hipster urban-lifestyle centre and entertainment venue that features shops, cafes, garage and even a vertical farm. In keeping with it’s owners idea of re-purposing things and giving new life to things that may otherwise have been discarded, The Garage KL was created from 15 re-purposed shipping containers.

This interesting and raw space is just ideal for any event that wants to be different as it is just the place emanates energy out of it. This could be suitable for events that go up to 100 pax.

The Garage KL, also known as Gaffe and Co, is located at Jalan Hillview, Taman Sri Ukay, Ampang. It is easily accessible by car and the café provides an open parking space.

We were there just before lunch hour to check out the place, and it was definitely breathtaking and can easily fit in a big crowd, with both indoor and outdoor seating.

The ‘container’ style restaurant stands out with its Star Wars theme and has a pretty good chef that cooks amazingly yummy food with quirky names… We had a chance to see him demonstrate a few dishes with names like Lamb-horghini, Chicken Jordan and Tiger Beef..

Inside, The Garage KL’s signature café and restaurant isn’t the only draw here.

Outside and downstairs, there are a number of small and medium-sized ‘shops’ where you can find both motoring and non-motoring entities.

The latter includes a vape shop, urban lifestyle apparels stores, a barbershop and what do you know…  an actual garage that offers the usual services and vehicle tuning.

What that makes this stands out is that it is also where you can find the famous Japanese Porsche/ Volkswagen tuning firm RAUH-Welt Bergriff (RWB Kuala Lumpur)

And of course, the ‘blue match-box’ Volkswagen car is very eye catching too.. as well as a real motorhome at the side…

I was definitely very impressed by one of the start ups there which was the Babylon Vertical Farm, run by Zul and Joel, using just plastic pipes, sponge, water, uv lighting, they manage to start an impressive farm that can supply herbs, strawberries and all in a container green house…

SUE KAMILAH TEH BENG MADU

On a humid day, there can be nothing more satisfying then a glass of iced cold drink… and well, here at Sue Kamilah’s shop, in Bandar Baru Bangi, you can find a combination of Teh Tarik or pulled tea, added with honey and served with ice and plenty of foam…

I swear it is as yummy or very much more yummy then any Thai Milk Tea and cheaper too…. And yes, if you are around the area, you really should not miss out on it…

The conclusion.. absolutely refreshing and yummy drink… perfect food for my soul, and it only costs RM4 per glass…

SATAY KAJANG HAJI SAMURI

Restoran Sate Kajang Haji Samuri is supposedly the best place for Malay-style, halal satay. Satay is basically bite pieces of tender and succulent barbecued meat on bamboo skewers, marinated in a number of herbs and spices, and comes with a sweet tinge; accompanied with a rich peanut sauce.

Restoran Sate Kajang Haji Samuri is among the most well known around… and it was interesting getting to visit the headquarters and eat the satay at the satay capital (Kajang) of the country, though I am not such a huge fan of satay- ask my mom or my family and they can tell you that…

On the menu are a selection of meats: chicken and beef are the most popular, and there is also lamb, rabbit and tripe.

What makes Restoran Sate Kajang Haji Samuri satay famous would be the peanut sauce which is ahead of its peers. With chilli paste is served separate from the peanut gravy so you can actually mix the two to achieve your preferred spiciness level – the result is a smooth and nutty sauce perfect for all, and despite me not liking satay, I have to say I enjoy dipping the rice cakes into this sauce too

It can be interesting indulging in bbq on a warm balmy day, or even when it gets cooler in the evening.. and the experience is amplified with the beautiful lush natural environment and the sound of the rushing river in Kampung Kemensah, which is located about one to two km behind Zoo Negara (Malaysia’s National Zoo)…

Yours truly and the other participants of the Eat Travel Write 6, Selangor’s International Culinary Adventure, got to indulge our taste buds in their Family Set platter consisting of Smokey Duck, Organic Grilled Chicken, Beef Tenderloin, Lamb cuts served with rice and coleslaw, RM130.. I only got three words to say… two thumbs up

I personally could not get enough of the Smokey Duck and the Lamb cuts…

We manage to try the Lamb Soup which came served with toasted bread and it was really good too… savoury and flavorful all at the same time.. sheer orgasmic..

KAMPUNG SUNGAI BUAH

After the hustle and bustle of the concrete jungle, it can be a nice change of pace when we enter villages and try to adjust and enjoy the simple life of villagers…

Kampung Sungai Buah is situated in Dengkil, Selangor and is considered one of the best and most innovative villages around…and it is inhabited by three different ethnics, which are the Minangkabaus, Boyan and Javanese who get along well with each other despite their little differences.

We were greeted by the village chief and treated to a performance which showcased wedding clothing, and a folk dance by the youths of the community…

..whereas the ladies taught the few of us how to cook betik tumis/ sauteed semi ripe papaya and also rendang pucuk ubi.. which we just cannot stop eating… oh my goodness…

Lunch was also a simple affair there with a few selected Javanese dishes but it was just mouth wateringly delicious and flavorful.. my mini me enjoyed the dishes loads as well..

After lunch, we had a little visit to the village kerepek/ chips ‘factory’, tried the kerepek and since it was just so good, we bought some to bring home too

From there, we took a little drive to the Tasik Idaman, a very picturesque area where pictures and selfies were taken as we drank in the magnificent views…

Our visit to the charming village ended with delicious fried banana fritters, tempe fritters, etc and milk tea….A perfect ending to our ETW6.0 trip there…
