Sustainable tourism is a continuous process and it requires constant monitoring of impacts, introducing the necessary preventive and/or corrective measures whenever necessary.
Sustainable tourism should also maintain a high level of tourist satisfaction and ensure a meaningful experience to the tourists, raising their awareness about sustainability issues and promoting sustainable tourism practices amongst them on the other hand, Responsible which is similar to sustainable tourism, is a form of tourism in a more responsible way.
Some of the key points of Responsible tourism would be:
- minimizing negative social, economic and environmental impacts
- generating greater economic benefits for local people and enhances the well-being of host communities
- involves local people in decisions that affect their lives and life chances
- makes positive contributions to the conservation of natural and cultural heritage embracing diversity
- provides more enjoyable experiences for tourists through more meaningful connections with local people, and a greater understanding of local cultural, social and environmental issues
- is culturally sensitive, encourages respect between tourists and hosts, and builds local pride and confidence
So for Colours of Lives Travelogue Malaysia’s first trip in Melaka recently, we decided to highlight sustainable tourism with some of the following places, and this would be focused more on local tourists and well, foreign tourists as well who would enjoy more local twist to their adventure in our beautiful and diverse country..
PNK Melaka Barat Resort
PNK Melaka Barat Resort is a local resort run by the local fishermen community along the Kuala Sungai Baru, KM 43, 78200, Melaka…
It is about 170 km away from Kuala Lumpur, 40 km from Melaka and 10 km from Masjid Tanah…
They have some pretty neat Standard rooms that comes with 1 Queen Bed or Deluxe rooms that comes with 1 Queen Bed and 1 Single Bed. The rooms are air conditioned and there are coffee and tea making facilities as well as some Astro channels on TV..
I got to stay in one of their Deluxe rooms and found the bed, pillows clean and comfortable. Of course, you cannot compare it to the hotels, as these is basically a home grown kind of place, with a more rustic and laid back feel.
My room and bathroom might not be spotlessly clean, but it was reasonably clean.. but the only thing I had to ‘complain’ was there was no water heater in my room, so I turned off the air conditioning for 15 minutes or so before heading to the bathroom for my shower…
The rooms are interestingly named after fishes, like Sembilang, Bawal, Todak, Merah, etc…. and yes, they use an actual key to access the rooms…
There is a huge field in front of the accommodation building, and resting huts, praying room, and a swimming pool for kiddies…
They actually do have a hall that can accommodate about 150 people and a whole load more…
Dinner is thrilling since Melaka is well known for their seafood dishes, and well, they have a pretty good Restoran Ikan Bakar /Grilled Fish Restaurant here… where you can choose all the seafood you can afford or what you like and get the chefs to cook it in your preferred style..
I would recommend the cuttle fish to be made to fritters, and the fish cooked the tiga rasa style as I enjoyed those the most..
For more info on the PNK Melaka Barat Resort, contact En Sukri, the manager at 011 11774265 or 06- 387 9934
Cucur Udang Baha Alor Gajah
Cucur Udang Baha Alor Gajah is said to be one of the best place to have your cucur udang or prawn fritters and it can gather quite a crowd at certain time..
The owner En Baha makes his own sauce and bottled it for sale as well.. and the cucur udang is definitely pretty good..
…it was crunchy and came with taufu, fish cake, cucumber, tempe, egg and other ingredients which you can add on at any time according to your taste buds. The price for this is also pretty affordable as you can feed 3 people for just RM6.00 or 4 people for just RM8….
They also have some nasi lemak and satay at the Pasar Menggong located right across the road from the Dataran Keris..
House of Tapai Pulut Sarimah
Personally, I am not quite a huge fan of Tapai, but apparently my influencer friends are… we got to visit this little home industry that began with some determination and just about RM20 and what they had in the kitchen, and today, 20 years later, Tapai Pulut Sarimah is a household name around Melaka making hundreds of packages a day with strict quality control and all…
Puan Sarimah was a gracious host and treated us to some local favorites keropok lekor and curry puffs as well her tapai.. as well as another tapai dessert served with evaporated milk, and some ice cream… which is one of the ways to enjoy the pungent and slightly bitter tapai..
They welcome visitors as well as orders… contact them at 06 385 3041, 385 3042 or visit them at Lot 7129A, Kg. Air Hitam Pantai, Tanjung Bidara, 78300 Masjid Tanah, Melaka

Homestay Kampung Ayer Limau
Kampung Ayer Limau was founded in 1820. The village derived its name from the lime trees that were found in the area back then.. Kampung Ayer Limau is located at Batu 19 1/2 Jalan Sekolah Lama, Kg Ayer Limau,783000 Masjid Tanah
The unique thing about homestays are that you actually get a taste of life in a kampung or traditional village.
These homestay kampung are have been carefully vetted by the Ministry of Tourism committed to giving visitors a village-style living with your temporary foster family/home.
We arrived at our homestay about 8 pm and after a whole day out, I was knackered and just wanted to curl up in my bed and sleep… and that was what I did, after meeting my foster family with two other Travelogue Malaysia team mates, I excused myself into the spacious room I was given, went and take my bath and then slept.
The room I was given was big, and had a fan, a queen sized bed where I slept, and a double decker bed with plenty of spare mattresses just in case they wanted to accommodate a huge crowd of people, and yes, in case you are wondering, the Homestay of Kampung Ayer Limau are runned by relatives and close friends, all who are dedicated, warm and caring and you will really feel like ‘coming home’… The bedroom, the home and the gardens were all very clean and immaculate…
My team mates enjoyed a lovely dinner with grilled fish and all with their foster family, before retiring for the night.
Early next morning, ibu, what our host insisted on us calling her had coffee prepared on the kitchen table. We then wandered around her home and gardens while she prepared some fried tempe and tauhu as well as some nasi lemak.. all which were just so yummy….
It was a slightly emotional moment when we had to say our good byes…

Roti Canai Kayu Arang
Roti Canai Kayu Arang is an eatery serving some of the best local breakfast around. As you enter the crowded shop, yes, it is crowded by reputation, you cannot help but notice the large griddle over the charcoal, thus the name… and the man painstakingly cooking one roti after another.. and on the other table a lady is flipping the dough to make the roti base..
The Travelogue team manage to find a table after a few minutes and settled down while the friendly owner made us laugh with her antics and her rattling off the menu items for us to decide…
Our team ordered the Lontong (rice cakes + turmeric coconut milk gravy with vegetables) , Roti dangdut (sunny side up eggs + roti canai) , Roti Nachos and Nasi Lemak…
Roti Nachos is some pizza made with roti canai as the base and it comes topped with something very much like chicken Bolognese and sprinkled with capsicums, raw purple cabbage and a whole load of cheese…
Our nasi lemak came with cockle rendang, cockle sambal, sambal sotong and some paru….it was definitely yummy-licious and all of us were so contented after our lovely breakfast…

Kuih Keria Antarabangsa Limbongan Melaka
Kuih Keria Antarabangsa Limbongan Melaka was where the team from Travelogue Malaysia saw the Melaka favorite kuih being made…A lot of care and work is put into making the kuih and it definitely was really yummy…
Naturally, the staff were excited to see my team mate/influencer who also happened to be a good looking actor.. and were all squealing and murmuring in excitement…
And yes, they actually also have a delivery so if you have some function, maybe you might just like to order some of these yummy kuih…

Klebang Original Coconut Shake
The Klebang Original Coconut Shake is located next to the Caltex Petrol Station along the main road, and after a sweltering morning out in the sun with Malaysia’s humid weather, I almost moaned in ecstasy when my drink came and I took a long sip of my Coconut Shake…so so refreshing….
The Klebang Original Coconut Shake is a concoction of ice-cream, coconut water and the flesh. The taste was not over sweet with the nice fragrance of the coconut drink and some tiny bits of flesh. It’s practically orgasmic… ok… maybe I am over saying it, but it felt that way to me…
Definitely highly recommended especially on a super hot day….
