Muar is a charming little town that is also a nice stopover for breakfast, lunch or dinner for foodies…
Also known as Bandar Maharani (Town of the Empress), Muar was recently declared as the royal town of Johor by Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar…
Muar is also one of the cleanest city in South East Asia, and was awarded Asean Clean Tourist City Standard Award 2017 recently…
Now Muar is famous for a lot of good food but since we had only so little time this time in Muar, we only managed to squeeze in a few places… and this was it… what we could not resist…
Cendol Kampung Hulu Muar
One of the new attractions in Muar located at the back lane which has been beautifully revamped with colourful and attractive wall murals…
This is of course a branch off the Cendol Kampung Hulu in Melaka and serves somewhat the same kind of cendol… minus the food… so yup… sob sob… no Ramen Asam Pedas for me…
Like I mentioned, this version is cendol is more like a cendol bingsu with the frozen coconut milk iced shaved with bingsu ice machine…. and well you can choose the toppings of your choice…
From Durian, Mango, sea coconut, fruit cocktail, etc…
Since it is quite popular and trendy, you probably need to queue up for your order and it can be a bit humid and sweaty if you are there at noon as the only place to sit are some limited tables and chairs under the shade of some bouganvillea “trees”…. but I guess the nice shaved coconut ice is worth it once it slides down your parched throat…
You should however visit and take some photos there as the Muar City Council has taken great pains to clean and beautify the area with colourful and attractive murals….

Sai Kee Kopi 434 Muar
Sai Kee Kopi 434 Muar is the place to get yourself a cup of local Muar coffee…
Famous for its Elephant Beans coffee, this little local “Starbucks” kind of shop is pretty packed during the weekends…
Sai Kee Kopitiam serves different variations of coffee from the classic kopi ais, to sophisticated iced-dripped coffee and milkshakes though the milkshakes seemed for like ice blended coffee….
Be sure to order some traditional steamed butter and kaya buns, otak-otak buns and the famous Mi Siput for some local feel… you definitely won’t regret it!!!
Sai Kee Kopi 434 Muar

R&H Cafe / Sate Maharani
Johoreans are slightly quirky as they love their satay for breakfast while other states in the country normally consume satay their evening snack….
And one of the most popular place in Muar would be the R&H Café Sate Maharani….
Currently located at the corner lot of a row of shop houses at Jalan Temenggong Ahmad 26/1, the cafe is a popular haunt for locals and outsiders alike…. obvious from the pretty crammed interior, with many people eating and many others milling around looking for available tables…
R&H Cafe specialises in satay from beef and chicken to stomach and tripe….
R&H Café also serves other southern delicacies like Lontong Champion, Mee Rebus Jawa and the famous Tauhu Lentok which is fried soft tofu, slice cucumbers, and bean sprouts served with a thick, sweet and spicy sauce and a sprinkling of crushed peanuts.
When we were there recently they also had a new addition called the Pisang Pasir Nabila.. practically banana fritters coated with crumbs and deep fried before being smothered in green tea, chocolate, chocolate cheese or so on… and they taste decadently delicious…
You can even buy the original frozen and take it home to fry it yourself….
R&H Cafe

There are many more other amazing places to eat in Muar and I know I cannot wait to go back there again to try out all the other good food there, soon…
