Having a bit of an adventurous streak in me, I for one am a person who loves to try new things…
So when I was invited to try some authentic food from Jaffna, the Northern Province of Sri Lanka… My curiosity was piqued…
My besties and I headed over to Yarl Restaurant then which was located in a row of shoplots somewhere behind the YMCA in Brickfields…
Yarl Restaurant began its origins as a small sidewalk stall in the middle of Brickfields about 10 years ago… It is their passion of serving authentic Jaffna food which is what that made their restaurant what it is now…
Some of my best friends were first slightly apprehensive about the food, but after the first bite they were sold and Dayat, our photographer /videographer who is the one with the more particular (picky) tastebuds said it was definitely one of the best food he has had…
The 2 home-trained chefs serves up traditional hand-me-down recipes from their ancestors which focuses on the 6 Tastes of Food, in Tamil known as “Arusuvai”, which are Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter, Pungent (Spicy) and Astringent (Dry)…
It is said back in the days, it is believed that every meal should have an equal balance of all these flavours to properly satisfy each major taste bud on our palate…. So using this concept, every dish that is served at Yarl holds one of the components in the 6 tastes…
Thus you will find a unique selection of dishes that will well complement each other when combined together…. And that my dear is what that makes your meal at Yarl unique….
We ordered some Vegetable Roll
(RM2), Chicken Roll (RM3) and Mutton Roll (RM4) to try.. It tasted like how Samosas tasted like somewhat but with more ummphh, as each bite was very flavourful and spicy and you can taste the ingredients…
Then we had some Plain Appam (RM2), Sweet Appam (RM3) which came with milk and brown sugar in the centre…. I admit I had a little bit of misgivings at first but I tried it and yes it was yummy, so yummy… Zol (my bestie) he had 3…(actually he ordered 2, and the last one came as our dessert…) then we also ordered the Egg Appam (RM3.50) which came with a sunny side up egg in the middle… (kinda telur goyang kind of style)…
Then for mains we had some Yarl Dosai (RM3.50) and Chicken Kothu with Roti (RM10) and Mutton Kothu with Idiyappam (RM12) which was really really good…
Then we had some Prawn Poriyal (RM14), Mutton Varuval (RM12) and Crab Curry (RM10 per 100kg)… These are seriously the most delicious curries you can have… They are all super yummy and we polished every bit to the last piece despite being super full…
The crabs in the Crab Curry is made with the Sri Lankan Blue Swimmer Crab marinated with the imported spices that are expertly blended by Yarl’s chefs to give you the authentic taste of Jaffna….
Besides that, all or most of the ingredients that are used are imported directly from Jaffna itself…
The vegetables used in Jaffna cooking are not commonly found in other restaurants. In Jaffna, vegetables such as beetroot is widely used not only for its flavour but its health benefits as well… So be assured you will find a plethora of home-cooked Jaffna vegetarian and non-veg dishes, you will not find anywhere else….
And do you know what bowls us over? It is the fact that you can get great tasting authentic Jaffna food in a beautiful air conditioned cafe with beautiful ambience at the most reasonable prices…
It is super worth it… So go spice up your life with the yummy dishes of Jaffna here at Yarl..
Yarl is opened from 7am until 10pm daily…
