Bukit Lawang is a serene village in North Sumatra… It’s location is a main access point into the green heart of Sumatra: the Leuser Ecosystem….
We were there to meet and see rehabilitated and wild orangutans in the wild, via a guided tour through the lush rainforests of the region, and so we spent a night at the Ecolodge Bukit Lawang…
Staying in this beautiful place is indeed a rare and unique experience as well as a support to sustainable tourism…
Ecolodge Bukit Lawang enables guests the rare opportunity to be immersed in North Sumatra’s rainforest environment while also contributing to the conservation of the critically endangered Sumatran orangutan – with proceeds donated to the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme….
Getting to the Ecolodge Bukit Lawang was an adventure itself since we practically had to cross the raging river in the dark (since we arrived there at night) via the simple suspension bridge..
The Ecolodge Bukit Lawang reception, restaurant, lounge area was of course a sight to behold… A masterpiece made from bamboo in the shape of a boat..
Our home for the night was a twin room in a small courtyard with adjacent rooms around it… It was clean with a partially open air en-suite shower area and I kind of liked how the bathroom looked.. It was pretty stylish…
The bed was made from bamboo as most of the furniture was, and it came with mosquito nets, and there was no airconditioning, but a fan but believe me it is cold enough in the evenings..
Breakfast was simple and nicely presented before we headed for our Orangutan trek… and lunch was also pretty yummy after that… We checked out after lunch so did not get to try other things…
Beware the wandering long tailed macaques /monkeys, which can be pretty threatening and aggressive.. They appear in a group to harass people…
Anyway, overall it was a good stay here at Ecolodge a Bukit Lawang, one I won’t mind repeating and also one that I truly recommend… Come stay here and go for the Orangutan treks, it is a must!!!
