5 Eateries You Should Not Miss in Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan

Negeri Sembilan is located on the west coast of the peninsular of Malaysia, just south of Kuala Lumpur… Negeri Sembilan was settled by the Minangkabau people from Sumatra in the 15th century and they brought with them their culture, their distinctive architecture, their traditions, their language and their food, all of which remain to this day.

Negeri Sembilan actually has a lot of good food to offer travelers or even foodies and here are just a tiny portion of some eateries I got to enjoy at Kuala Klawang, a tiny town in Jelebu while on a Media Familiarisation trip with Gaya Travel Magazine, Tourism Malaysia and Negeri Sembilan Tourism….

Salai Kayangan Jelebu

Salai means smoked and smoked meats (and fish) are a traditional way of cooking for the Malays in Negeri Sembilan, giving the meats – chicken, duck, beef, and fish – a distinct fragrant and smoky flavour. These meats are then used for cooking in rendang and masak lemak cili padi … stepping into Salai Kayangan Jelebu you can see the meats here getting smoked….and cannot miss the smoky smell wafting through the air

Masak lemak cili padi (spicy tumeric Coconut Milk dishes) is usually made by cooking fish, seafood, meat (usually chicken), smoked meats and fish, eggs, mushrooms, and/or vegetable in coconut milk blended with turmeric and ground cili padi. Masak Lemak Cili Api is a Negeri Sembilan specialty. The addition of fresh turmeric gives the gravy its golden colour. This dish can be pretty spicy depending on how much bird eye chillis are added in. They occasionally replace the beef with fish and add pineapple to provide a savoury flavour to the dish. For a filling meal, serve it with rice. Locals love this dish because it is unique in terms of flavours, as it is spicy, salty with a hint of smoky flavour!!!

Among the dishes you can find here would be Daging salai, Semilang salai, Ayam salai, itik salai, Siput sedut masak lemak and a whole lot more local favorites… all packed full of flavours so muchnso that Salai Kayangan has become a famous place for celebrities and VIPs including ministers to drop by whenever they are in Jelebu…

Pijoi Bahulu

I love bahulu… and Pijoi Bahulu is a stall situated at the roadside (You will not miss the stall with their banner along the way) in Kuala Klawang, Jelebu…You can watch the fresh Bahulu delicacies being prepared before your eyes on weekends and public holidays.

These Bahulu delicacies are a tasty treat for locals in the morning or evening accompanied by coffee or tea, and personally for me, I love it when it is piping hot and fresh from the oven!!!

This traditional delicacy is made up of only three ingredients namely eggs, sugar and flour, but the baking process is strenuous and time-consuming.

Bahulu sellers usually use electric oven for faster and easier baking, but Pijoi Bahulu use the traditional way of tending to firewood, coconut husks and sand, so that the Bahulu will turn out chewier, more fragrant and has a longer shelf life…

The make shift oven bakes the Bahulu to perfection in like one to two minutes…

You can try the Bahulu delicacies for free and then pick your own freshly baked Bahulu delicacies and purchase it for RM20 per container of 45 pieces!!!

On normal weekdays, you can still purchase your Bahulu delicacies which have been ready packed in the plastic container… Pijoi Bahulu also sells other traditional delicacies like dodol, wajik, and so on…
