Food Review 2024 – Places to eat in Perlis

Perlis might be the smallest state in Malaysia but because its  proximity to Southern Thailand, you get a lot of yummy food which probably is a  fuse of Thai and Malay cuisine…

As mentioned, Kuala Perlis is well known for its delicious and fresh seafood… and during the recent media trip with Gaya Travel and Malaysian Cooperative Societies Commission (SKM), I had the opportunity to try quite a bit of yummy food!!!

Umar Seafood & Grill

Had our first dinner here at Umar Seafood & Grill in Kuala Perlis… it is relatively new as I think it has only been opened since last year… the ambience was top notch as it was located at the waterfront area and so you can dine while enjoying the breeze and looking at fishing boats…

The seafood is pretty fresh & of reasonable size.

The  restaurant is famous for it’s “kuah lemak” (coconut milk gravy) for some of the seafood offered.

🦑Salt baked Duck bill clams

🦑Steamed fish

🦐Green curry lala

🦑Tempura squid & prawns

🦐Eggplants stir fried

🦑Grilled fish with yellow paste and bitterbeans

Do give this place a try if you’re in Perlis.

Warong Ali Kopi

Warong Ali Kopi is a charming breakfast eatery in Kangar, Perlis

The owner worked at a Chinese kopitiam for 40 years and the coffee here is worth trying since it’s home made and one of their specialty. On the other hand the Char Koay Teow chef also used to be a chef at Penang’s E&O hotel before resigning and going back to his hometown…

There is a wide selection of great food from roti sarang burung special, char koay teow, lontong, otak otak, nasi lemak, lempeng and toast with half cooked eggs- all of them were delicious.

The place is however a hidden gem and tucked away behind the glorious paddy fields of Perlis and can be a bit challenging to get to because the road is very narrow and one way only.

No. 65, Kampung Kechor Behor Ampang, 01000 Kangar

Sabut Ikan Bakar Restaurant

The restaurant is located near at the mouth of a river, and you can see fishing boats and vessels moored at the jetty area….

Sabut Ikan Bakar restaurant serves fresh seafood which you can pick and choose and decide on how you like it prepared!!!

The ambiance of the place is balmy, nice  and you can enjoy the evening breeze while dining here….

We had some sambal crabs, vegetables, steamed cockles, grilled mackeral, fried egg and tom yam prawns….. and the food was pretty good!!!

NO 2, Pengkalan Jeti Tok Kuning, Jalan Kampung Kota Kayang, 02000 Kuala Perlis

Nipah Klasik

If you are looking for a unique dining experience in Perlis, you need to head over to Nipah Klasik…You will find yourself surrounded by the nature / the palms tree and fresh air….

This unique restaurant offers a unique experience of dining over a mangrove swamp under the shade of rustling palms.

The mangrove palm trees produce a huge Nipah palm fruit… which the locals harvest to make a refreshing sweet juice…

Nipah Klasik also serves a lot of delicious flavourful dishes for breakfast as well as lunch… I enjoyed having some nasi lemak with squid and some glutinous rice with deep fried chicken there…

Nyiru Klasik

Came here during dinner. There were plenty of seats provided, but parking could be somewhat limited…. Food-wise, delicious and cheap.

The restaurant is easily accessible and located next to the main road before reaching Kuala Perlis town.

The service here was good and considered fast even with the busy dinner time during my visit.

The food was very delicious..the place is very clean and spacious. The most important thing is the taste of all the food that we’ve had were delicious especially the ikan bakar..everybody should give it a try..highly recommended..

Warong Western RM1.90

Only RM1.90!? Yes!!! It’s that cheap!   At the Warong Western, you actually can get delicious western dishes at affordable prices!!!!

The Warong Western which is located in Arau, Perlis is probably the only restaurant in Malaysia that serves up western dishes for as low as RM1.90.

You can order Chicken Chop, Grilled Chicken, Chicken Skin Crispy Kriukk Krapp and Chicken Fingers for just RM1.90! It’s  almost surreal and unbelievable!!!

We had their Mix Platter, a huge plate of lamb,  beef,  chicken and cheesy wedges for just about RM14.90

Sarang Burung

This economy food style (yeah, it’s a take what you want kind of serving) restaurant is another one to check-off your list in Perlis. Located in the town of Kangar, Sarang Burung Restaurant serves up with a wide variety of local Malay dishes for you to enjoy. With the perfect mixture of traditional and modern Malay cuisines, this restaurant certainly combines the best of local Perlis flavours under one roof.

Among the dishes you can get are grilled fish, fried cat fish, fried chicken, and even stir fried side dishes. Usually customers will be random with the food choices available here.
