Visiting an ex – Communist Tunnel, the Khao Nam Khang Historical Tunnel

I was definitely excited and thrilled to have been given the opportunity to visit the Khao Nam Khang Historical Tunnel when in Hat Yai recently!!!

Khao Nam Khang Historical Tunnel is situated in Mu 1, Ban Piyamit 5, Tambon Klongkwang, Natawee District, Songkhla Province, four Km from Khao Nam Khang National Park.

In the past, this area was a communist village. Tunnels were built in the mountains to provide housing and shelter for the Communist people, but after almost 40 years of fighting with the government, the Communist Party declared an end to the fighting and joined as a co-developer of the Thai nation in 1987.

It took two years to complete the tunnel by human. Moreover, outside the tunnel there is a basketball court, kitchen, wedding room, and resident for comrades….

The length inside the tunnel is about 1,000 meters long, and it is divided into many rooms such as bedrooms, cooking room, signals office, meeting room, shooting range, emergency room, etc.

The Khao Nam Khang Historical Tunnel is a clay tunnel which is also the largest and longest tunnel in Thailand, and was excavated into the mountain with only three entrances at the beginning.

After a long battle, the tunnel was partly damaged and had to be rebuilt and renovated in

1995 before it was decided to preserve it as a site of study, history and tourist attraction by Mr. Leong Yee Sing and Mr. Pang Min Sang.

The tunnel was then given 16 entrances covering three floors, linked to each floor via  stairs.

It was opened to the public on March 22, 1997 as a unique new tourist attraction….

You can find a restaurant, a souvenir shop and herbal remedies shop at the tunnel complex….

The restaurant actually serves pretty healthy and delicious food !!!!

Once we finished our lunch, we headed to a briefing room where we watched a video and heard stories from one of the Ex Communist Captains… I did not understand so much as he was explaining it all in Chinese… then we were led to the little museum before we had to climb the hill to get to the entrance of the tunnel…..

Interested tourists can visit the tunnel with Hatyai-Nathawee-Banprakob-Khao Nam Khang Route (92 km.) – about 1 1/2 hours from Hatyai city… Alternatively, tourist can go to Sadao, then take the route to Khao Nam Khang (26 km.) just opposite the Sadao District Office.
