I have a couple of best friends who come from Johor, and since I have been following them to Johor countless times, Johor food has also ranked amongst my favorites…
And among some of my favorite Johor dishes would be the Laksa Johor, Mee Bandung… My Johorean friend loves his Kacang Pool, and my daughter loves her Tauhu Begedil…
Recently, I got to know that Warong Atokk Nenek, a little shop in Klang that serves these yummy dishes in a comfortable and nice ambience…
Warong Atokk Nenek serves good Johorean favorites for breakfast, lunch & tea time…
Among the dishes are….
Laksa Johor is an interesting dish as unlike it’s laksa counterparts, Laksa Johor is prepared using spaghetti instead of noodles or bihun. The curry-like gravy is thick, almost like a paste made of fish (ikan parang or ikan tenggiri), coconut milk, dried shrimps, asam gelugur as well as a blend of herbs and spices including kerisik, lemongrass, and galangal.
Originating from Muar, my BFF’s hometown, mee bandung consists of yellow mee served with a thick, flavourful broth made of chilli, onion, spices, shrimp paste, and dried shrimp. The dish is also usually accompanied with slices of meat, prawns, fish cakes, squid, and hard-boiled egg.
Warong Atokk Nenek adds the tulang version in so this dish comes with a lamb shank bone, which you can suck savoury bone marrow from with a straw! Simply lip smacking good…
Influenced by Arabic cuisine, kacang pool is a dish consisting of minced meat cooked with foul medames beans. The dish is garnished with slices of onions, a lime, and a sunny side up egg. It is eaten with some bread…
Tauhu Begedil are deep fried tofu puffs filled with minced meat and potato… This tofu puffs are first emptied of tofu, then stuffed with a savoury mixture of mashed potato, minced beef or chicken and eaten with sambal kicap… Try it, it’s a perfect match in culinary heaven….
There are also other dishes such as the Sangkaya, Nasi Ujang, and other delicious dishes…
Sangkaya is basically steamed thick slices of bread with some coconut custard dip.. It’s the dip that determines if your Sangkaya is a winner…
Nasi Ujang is said to begin in Kluang.. It is basically a chicken gravy dish served with soft fluffy white rice…
Warong Atokk Nenek is opened from Tuesday to Sunday from 7am to 5pm… The shop is Closed every Monday….
Warong Atokk Nenek is right opposite the famous and viral Regent Pandan Layer cake shop and is popular on its own too as some of their top dishes can get sold out on weekends…
