Entertainment 2025 : Camaraderie by HANDS Percussion: A Celebration of Rhythm, Bonds & Legacy

There’s something magical about how music—especially rhythm—can connect people across generations, cultures, and even life experiences. And this November, I’m excited to share that HANDS Percussion, Malaysia’s leading contemporary drum ensemble, is bringing us a brand-new production that embodies just that: Camaraderie.

📍 When & Where
Mark your calendars because Camaraderie premieres from November 14–16, 2025 at PJ Performing Arts Centre (PJPAC), 1 Utama.

Why “Camaraderie”?

The word itself comes from French, meaning a deep spirit of trust and connection beyond just friendship. And that’s exactly what HANDS wants us to feel—how rhythm and memory can bridge relationships, traditions, and even generations.

What to Expect at Camaraderie

🎶 Reimagined Classics, With a Twist
HANDS is breathing new life into their signature works, this time in collaboration with the ITA Ensemble. Think of it as an East-meets-West blend, where live percussion meets electronic remixes—traditional yet refreshingly modern.

✨ Two Brand-New Works

  • Kenangan, composed by Teuku Umar (founder of Gangsapura Gamelan), reflects 17 years of friendship and artistic growth. With gamelan at its heart, this piece will feel like a nostalgic yet vibrant journey.
  • new Teochew-inspired work, drawing from myth and heritage, showcasing how cultural stories can be retold through rhythm and colour.

Generations on Stage
This is the part I’m most looking forward to: Principal Percussionist Jimmy Ch’ng performing with his daughter. It’s not just music—it’s a story of legacy and love. And then there’s 10-year-old Yanhou, who started drumming with HANDS at age five and is now one of the youngest cast members. Talk about passing the torch in the most inspiring way!

🎼 More Than Drums
Camaraderie isn’t just about percussion. Expect the cello, guzheng, gamelan, and even a special collaboration with DeafBeat, Malaysia’s pioneering deaf percussion ensemble. This layered soundscape promises to be as diverse as it is powerful.

Why You Shouldn’t Miss It

HANDS has always been about more than performance—they represent Malaysian identity, innovation, and cultural exchange. From their roots in the 24 Festive Drums tradition to pushing boundaries on international stages, this ensemble continues to inspire. And Camaraderie feels like it’s going to be one of those unforgettable productions where you don’t just watch—you feel every beat in your bones.
