Travel 2025 – Exploring Johor: My Favourite Spots for Adventure, Food & Hidden Gems

There’s something about Johor that always pulls me back, maybe it’s because my best friend originated from Johor, maybe it is from the mix of coastal beauty, family-friendly attractions, and that warm southern charm that makes you feel right at home.

On my recent trip with Gaya Travel and Tourism Johor, I got to go beyond the usual stops and explore some of Johor’s must-visit gems, from Desaru’s sunny vibes to Mersing’s coastal delights and the local food spots that truly tell the story of Johor’s flavours.

🏟️ Sultan Ibrahim Stadium (SSI), Iskandar Puteri

If you’re a football fan (or even if you’re not), Stadium Sultan Ibrahim is a must-see landmark. This architectural marvel isn’t just home to Johor Darul Ta’zim FC….. it’s a symbol of Johor pride.

The design, inspired by the fierce spirit of the Southern Tigers, looks stunning whether you’re catching a game or simply admiring it from the outside.

Come on a sunny day (like I did) or like some friends suggested… at sunset, when the sky turns golden… it’s perfect for photos and that “I was here” moment.

And when you are here do NOT miss out on the HUMMER Stretch Limousine ride outside the stadium….!!! It’s your chance to feel like a star of JDT!!!

⛳ The Els Club, Desaru Coast

For a touch of luxury and leisure, we made a stop at The Els Club Desaru Coast, one of the region’s most scenic golf courses designed by the legendary Ernie Els himself.

Even if you’re not an avid golfer, the view of rolling greens meeting the South China Sea is worth a visit. I loved the calm, the sea breeze, and the overall resort vibe… it’s the kind of place where time slows down.

🍍 Desaru Fruit Farm, Kota Tinggi

Next, I swapped seaside views for lush greenery at Desaru Fruit Farm. It’s a refreshing stop filled with tropical goodness…. imagine walking through rows of fruit trees, tasting freshly cut pineapples and honey jackfruit, and learning about sustainable farming.

It’s great for families or anyone looking to reconnect with nature (and snack their way through it!).

Don’t skip the petting zoo if you are an animal lover!!! I had a blast with the ball python, the blue tongue skink, the alpacas, the marble foxes, the meerkat and even the raccoons and loved it sooooo much!!!

❄️ Snowland JB, Medini

Yes, snow in Johor! Snowland JB at Medini was such a fun surprise. Stepping into this indoor winter wonderland felt like a quick escape from the Malaysian heat.

With snowy slides, ice sculptures, and playful activities, it’s a fantastic spot for kids or just anyone who wants to channel their inner child. A great contrast after a warm day of exploring!

🌿 Sireh Park, Iskandar Puteri

Tucked away in Iskandar Puteri, Sireh Park is a peaceful escape that blends nature and recreation beautifully.

We went for a BBQ dinner and ended up staying much longer than planned, as we hopped on their ATV for a joyride around the area… during the day, there are hiking trails, lakes, and picnic spots, all surrounded by lush landscapes to explore too!!!

Whether you’re into photography, outdoor workouts, or just breathing in fresh air, Sireh Park gives you space to slow down.

🐟 Pak Dol Keropok Lekor & Hasil Laut, Mersing

A road trip in Johor wouldn’t be complete without a taste of the coast…. and Pak Dol Keropok Lekor in Mersing was my go-to stop.

Freshly fried keropok lekor with that satisfying crunch and authentic fish flavour… it’s the kind of snack that hits differently when you eat it by the sea.

They also sell a range of local seafood products … perfect souvenirs to bring home a piece of Johor’s flavour.

🍴 Where to Eat

🦞 Restoran Lobstam, Gelang Patah

Craving seafood? Restoran Lobstam was a highlight. This spot is known for its fresh catches — think buttery lobster, flavorful crabs, fishes, shell fishes and prawns cooked in local styles and flavours that bring out every bit of sweetness.

It’s casual yet impressive, the kind of place you visit for dinner after a day of exploring, where laughter fills the air and plates never stay full for long.

☕ Kluang RailCoffee, Yong Peng

To wrap up my Johor adventure, we stopped at the iconic Kluang RailCoffee… a name that’s practically part of Johor’s heritage.

The aroma of Hainanese coffee and toasted bread with kaya instantly transported me back to simpler times. It’s one of those places where locals and travellers sit side by side, chatting over breakfast or a late afternoon pick-me-up. Definitely a must-visit for anyone chasing authentic Johor flavours.

💬 Final Thoughts

Johor has this beautiful way of blending modern attractions with local authenticity… from world-class resorts to humble food stalls that make you feel like family. Whether you’re chasing new experiences or looking to slow down, there’s always a little adventure waiting here.

So, if you’re planning your next weekend escape …make it Johor. You’ll leave with full hearts, happy tummies, and plenty of amazong stories to tell.
