The California Wine Institute (CWI) marked a historic milestone with an exclusive celebration commemorating the 50th anniversary of the legendary 1976 Judgment of Paris, the blind tasting event that forever changed the world of wine and established California as one of the globe’s premier wine-producing regions.

Held at the elegant Pool House @ Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, the event gathered more than 60 members of the trade and media for an evening dedicated to the pioneering spirit, innovation, and excellence that have become synonymous with California wines.
Celebrating the Tasting That Changed Wine Forever

In 1976, British wine merchant Steven Spurrier organized a blind tasting in Paris that pitted California wines against some of France’s most prestigious labels. In a result that stunned the wine establishment, California Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon emerged victorious, proving that exceptional wines could come from beyond the traditional European heartlands.
The landmark event elevated California onto the global wine stage and embodied what California winemakers call the “Golden State of Mind”—a philosophy rooted in innovation, diversity, sustainability, and bold thinking.
To commemorate this golden anniversary, California Wine Institute is hosting celebrations across Asia, including Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Taipei, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Macau.
A Landmark Year for California Wines

According to Christopher Beros, Director for Greater China & Southeast Asia, the anniversary represents much more than a historic triumph.
“2026 is a landmark year for California wines for us. The 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris isn’t just about celebrating a historic victory—it’s about showcasing how California has continued to lead the world in quality, innovation, and sustainability. The values and spirit that shaped the Judgment of Paris continue to drive California winemakers today.”
Today, California remains one of the most progressive wine regions in the world, embracing sustainable practices and innovative winemaking techniques while producing wines celebrated for their quality and diversity.
An Evening of Heritage and Exceptional Wines

Guests at the Kuala Lumpur celebration enjoyed a special screening of a documentary recounting the iconic Judgment of Paris and were treated to a curated collection of wines representing both the pioneering wineries of 1976 and the new generation of California winemakers.
A highlight of the evening was the opportunity to sample wines from the two wineries that achieved the highest scores during the historic tasting:
- Chateau Montelena, whose Chardonnay won top honours in 1976.
- Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars, whose Cabernet Sauvignon triumphed over France’s finest reds.

The showcase also featured celebrated varietals including Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Zinfandel—California’s signature native grape—sourced from renowned wine-growing regions such as Napa Valley, Sonoma Coast, Lodi, and beyond.
