One of the highlights of DurioTourism MARDI is being taken directly into the lush durian orchard, where visitors can savour freshly harvested premium durians beneath the shade of the very trees that produced them.

There’s simply no comparison to enjoying durians at their freshest. The rich aroma, creamy texture and intense flavour create an unforgettable experience that every durian enthusiast should enjoy at least once.

The experience doesn’t stop with durians. Guests are also treated to freshly harvested mangosteens and juicy pomelos, making it the perfect fruit-filled getaway for families, friends and food lovers.

Meet MARDI Super 88 (MS88): Malaysia’s Premium Hybrid Durian

One of the stars of the orchard is MARDI Super 88 (MS88), formerly known as MDUR88, a premium hybrid durian developed through years of research by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI).

Since 2021, approximately 25,000 MS88 durian trees have been planted across Malaysia, covering an estimated 242.8 hectares nationwide.

The hybrid has been introduced to several states, including:

  • Melaka
  • Selangor
  • The East Coast states
  • Several other regions throughout Malaysia

MS88 has quickly become one of MARDI’s most successful premium durian varieties thanks to its excellent fruit quality and strong commercial potential.

MARDI has been developing premium durian varieties since the early 2000s.

Today, the institute has successfully introduced three premium hybrids:

  • MARDI Super 88 (MS88 / MDUR88) — the most popular variety.
  • MDUR78
  • MDUR79

These varieties are the result of years of dedicated research and development aimed at producing high-quality durians suitable for both consumers and commercial growers.

Exciting New Durian Hybrids Are on the Way

The future looks even sweeter for durian lovers.

According to Datuk Dr. Mohamad Zabawi Abdul Ghani, MARDI is currently evaluating three new hybrid durian varieties that are showing tremendous promise.

These new hybrids are now in the final stages of assessment to ensure they:

  • Meet the taste preferences of Malaysian durian lovers.
  • Deliver excellent fruit quality.
  • Are suitable for large-scale commercial cultivation.

The names of these new varieties have yet to be announced.

MARDI plans to officially launch them during a future durian season, allowing the public to taste the new hybrids immediately after their introduction.

Although the trees are already mature and producing fruit, MARDI is waiting until sufficient planting materials and fruit supply are available before officially declaring the new varieties.

This careful approach ensures farmers will have access to quality planting stock while consumers can enjoy a consistent supply of these exciting new premium durians.
