Get your sarongs, batik and songket ready! Keretapi Sarong is turning 10, and the 2026 edition is set to be the biggest Malaysia Day celebration yet.

Taking place on 16 September 2026, Keretapi Sarong 2026 (KS26) will bring Malaysians together in traditional attire across the Klang Valley and, for the first time in its history, simultaneously across 10 cities nationwide.

Organised by LOCCO, KS26 marks a decade of transforming public spaces and public transportation into colourful platforms for cultural expression, unity and national pride.

What started as a small cultural flash mob in Kuala Lumpur has grown over the past 10 years into one of Malaysia’s most anticipated Malaysia Day celebrations — bringing people from different backgrounds together through a shared love for tradition, community and the country’s wonderfully diverse identity.

A Decade of Sarongs, Culture and Togetherness

There is something uniquely Malaysian about seeing people from all walks of life boarding trains dressed in sarongs, batik, songket and traditional attire.

And that is precisely what has made Keretapi Sarong so special.

Over the years, the movement has turned ordinary train journeys and public spaces into colourful celebrations of Malaysian culture, creating opportunities for strangers to come together, celebrate and simply enjoy being Malaysian.

For its 10th anniversary, KS26 is taking that spirit even further.

For the first time, Keretapi Sarong will be celebrated simultaneously across 10 cities nationwide, making this the movement’s most extensive national participation to date.

The 10 participating cities are:

• Padang Besar
• Langkawi
• Sungai Petani
• George Town
• Ipoh
• Melaka
• Johor Bahru
• Kota Bharu
• Kuantan
• Kuching

LOCCO will announce the gathering points, activities and other details for each city through its official channels.

Klang Valley Celebration Keeps the Surprise Alive

For participants in the Klang Valley, the adventure will begin at 12 selected starting stations, where participants will gather before travelling together to a secret destination.

The mystery destination is part of the fun — and the element of surprise has become one of the traditions that makes Keretapi Sarong so memorable.

So, expect plenty of colour, music, traditional outfits and perhaps a few surprises along the way!

Growing Bigger Every Year

The nationwide expansion comes as Keretapi Sarong continues to attract impressive participation.

Approximately 12,000 people joined the 2024 edition, while more than 20,000 participants took part in 2025 across 11 starting stations in the Klang Valley.

With KS26 now expanding simultaneously across 10 cities, the 10th anniversary is shaping up to be a truly nationwide celebration.

Created as a musical expression of the movement’s spirit of togetherness, the song celebrates Malaysia’s cultural diversity and is envisioned to become the musical identity of Keretapi Sarong.

It is a fitting milestone for a movement that has spent the past decade creating memories through music, movement, culture and community.

Perhaps “Joget Sarong” will become one of those songs that Malaysians continue to sing, dance to and pass down to future generations.

The dress code is perhaps the easiest part!

Participants are encouraged to come dressed in sarongs, batik, songket or other traditional attire.

And since Keretapi Sarong is all about celebrating through public transportation, participants are also encouraged to use public transportation where available.
