Sometimes, we pass by the same roads, buildings and neighbourhoods every day without realising how much they mean to us. But what if the city we think we know has more stories to tell?

That’s the idea behind Southeast Express, the debut album by Kuala Lumpur-based singer-songwriter Ahns, released on 16 October 2026. With 10 tracks inspired by personal memories and the everyday landscapes of Kuala Lumpur, the album offers a different perspective on familiar surroundings, turning ordinary city life into something meaningful through music.
As someone who enjoys exploring places, discovering new experiences and looking at familiar destinations from a different angle, I find this concept rather interesting. After all, sometimes it’s not about travelling somewhere far away, but learning to appreciate the stories and memories connected to the places we already know.
An Exclusive First Listen to Southeast Express
On 15 October 2026, I had the opportunity to experience the world of Southeast Express during an exclusive first-listen event ahead of the album’s official release.
The afternoon began at BMW Millennium Welt, where guests were chauffeured to RAPTROOM for an intimate listening session. Rather than simply attending a music preview, the experience was designed as a journey into the ideas, places and personal stories behind Ahns’ music.

The drive itself became part of the experience, offering a different way to appreciate the city before we settled in to listen to the album. At RAPTROOM, guests got to enjoy Ahns’ music, hear more about the inspiration behind his work and experience live performances in a more personal setting.
I always appreciate experiences that offer something beyond the usual event format, and this one was a lovely reminder that music can be a way of discovering places and connecting with the stories behind them.
Growing Up Between Gombak and Segambut
Born from his experiences growing up between Gombak and Segambut, Ahns draws inspiration from the familiar landscapes of Kuala Lumpur and the everyday details of Malaysian life.

Think about the roads we travel daily, the neighbourhoods where we grew up, the buildings we pass without a second glance and the places that hold memories of different stages of our lives. These seemingly ordinary surroundings can become deeply personal when we look back at them.
For Ahns, these places are more than just locations on a map. They represent childhood, family, change and the feeling of belonging somewhere.
As he explains:
“There’s something about familiar places that stays with us, even as we grow and change. A street can hold a memory, a passing view can take you back to a different time, and somewhere you’ve been a hundred times can still make you feel something new.”
He adds that Southeast Express explores the little moments we often pass by and how they quietly become part of our stories.
“Maybe home isn’t just a place we return to, but all the things we carry with us along the way.”
I love this thought because home can mean different things to different people. It could be the neighbourhood where we grew up, the familiar journey home after a long day or even a place that brings back memories we thought we had forgotten.
Sometimes, it is these little things that make a place special.
A Musical Journey Through the City
Musically, Southeast Express brings together elements of alternative pop, dream pop, indie rock and ambient soundscapes, creating an atmospheric listening experience inspired by the world around us.

Across its 10 tracks, the album explores childhood memories, family, familiar neighbourhoods and the changing landscapes of Kuala Lumpur. Rather than simply documenting the city, Ahns uses these surroundings as a starting point to explore how places shape our emotions, memories and sense of identity.
It is an interesting approach because cities are constantly changing. New buildings appear, old landmarks disappear and familiar neighbourhoods evolve with time. Yet, the memories we associate with these places often remain with us.
The album encourages listeners to look beyond what they see and consider what these surroundings might represent in their own lives.
Whether it is a childhood memory, a familiar road or a place connected to someone special, there is often a personal story waiting to be rediscovered.
The Journey Behind the Album
Before the release of Southeast Express, Ahns gradually introduced listeners to his musical world through several singles.
His releases included Other Houses in February, Old News and Boys in April, followed by Swimming in July.
These releases led up to the arrival of his 10-track debut album in October, bringing together his reflections on growing up, personal experiences and the places that have shaped him.
For listeners who enjoy alternative and indie music with a more introspective feel, Southeast Express offers an opportunity to explore Kuala Lumpur through a different creative lens.
When Music Meets Visual Storytelling

One thing that makes Ahns’ artistic approach particularly interesting is his connection to visual storytelling.
His live performances incorporate self-directed footage collected over the years, bringing audiences closer to the people, places and everyday moments that inspire his music.
This visual element adds another dimension to his work. Instead of experiencing the songs on their own, audiences are also invited to see the environments and memories that have influenced the artist.
It creates a more immersive experience, allowing listeners to connect the sounds they hear with the images and stories behind them.
I think this is a meaningful way to present music, especially when the inspiration comes from real places and personal experiences. Sometimes, a simple visual can bring a song to life and help us understand the emotions behind it.
Rediscovering the City We Call Home
At its heart, Southeast Express is about finding meaning in familiar places and appreciating the moments we might otherwise overlook.
Ahns invites listeners to slow down, pay attention to their surroundings and consider how the places they have visited, lived in or passed through have become part of their personal stories.
For me, this is also a reminder that exploring does not always have to mean travelling overseas or ticking off a list of popular attractions. There is always something new to discover, even in a city we think we know so well.
A familiar street might bring back an old memory. A passing view might remind us of a different chapter in our lives. And a journey we have taken countless times might suddenly feel different when we stop and really pay attention.
Through Southeast Express, Ahns transforms these everyday experiences into music, offering a personal reflection on growing up, change and belonging.
So, the next time you are travelling through Kuala Lumpur, take a moment to look out the window and appreciate the city around you. You never know what memories might come back or what new stories you might discover.
Because sometimes, the most meaningful journeys are not about how far we go, but what we discover along the way.
