Chinese New Year has always felt like more than just a celebration … it’s a season where the air is filled with meaning. It’s the kind of time when families reunite, blessings are exchanged, and traditions quietly continue… even when no one is making a big deal about it.

And honestly? Some of the most beautiful parts of Chinese New Year are the ones that aren’t loud at all… the subtle gestures, the food lovingly prepared, the “are you eating enough?” questions, and the care that’s shown through action rather than words.
That’s exactly what Kwai Chai Hong’s Chinese New Year 2026 art installation, Guardians of Legacy (十二福星) is about a cultural showcase inspired by the traditional Cloth Tiger (布老虎), and the quiet love that has been passed down from generation to generation.
A CNY Tradition Rooted in Love: The Cloth Tiger (布老虎)
If you’ve never heard of the Cloth Tiger before, here’s what makes it so special:
The Cloth Tiger (布老虎) is a beloved form of folk art, traditionally handmade by parents or grandparents as an expression of love. It’s often gifted to children as a symbol of protection, carrying wishes for:
Safety
Courage
Wisdom
Good health
It’s such a tender tradition, because it reflects something very real in many Chinese families: love isn’t always spoken out loud, but it’s always felt.
As Zeen Chang, Co-Founder of Kwai Chai Hong, beautifully shared:
“In many Chinese families, expression of love between parents and children is rarely spoken aloud, instead it is deeply felt through actions and sacrifices.”
And as we grow older, we begin to understand it… that kind of love becomes a foundation for filial piety, the traditional virtue of returning protection, care, and appreciation to our parents and elders.
Introducing “Guardians of Legacy (十二福星)” at Kwai Chai Hong
In celebration of this enduring spirit, Kwai Chai Hong presents Guardians of Legacy (十二福星), an installation that introduces twelve Zodiac Guardians, each representing a unique blessing (祝福).
These twelve blessings reflect values we all want more of in life:
care
resilience
harmony
joy
prosperity
Together, the guardians form a powerful visual narrative of heritage, protection, and love, set beautifully within Kwai Chai Hong’s historic laneway in Kuala Lumpur’s Chinatown.
A Collaboration That Makes Perfect Sense: Kwai Chai Hong x guardian Malaysia
This year’s installation is made even more meaningful through its collaboration with guardian Malaysia … a brand many Malaysian households already associate with everyday care.
Zeen Chang explained that guardian represents a modern expression of the same intention behind the Cloth Tiger:
“…to safeguard loved ones through unostentatious and consistent care.”
Meanwhile, Priscilla Wu, Managing Director of guardian Malaysia, highlighted the brand’s legacy:
“As a home-grown pharmacy, health and beauty retail chain established in Malaysia nearly six decades ago, Guardian has been a pioneer in serving the evolving health and well-being needs of our communities.”
She also shared a sentiment that truly fits the heart of Chinese New Year:
“We believe wellness is shaped by everyday care – through small, thoughtful acts, genuine understanding, and being present at every stage of life.”
This collaboration celebrates heritage, community, and care, while supporting initiatives that uplift the communities guardian continues to serve.
The Art Behind It: 12 Sculptural Zodiac Guardians (Including a 7-Foot Lead Guardian!)
Conceptualised by Kwai Chai Hong Co-Founder Javier Chor, Guardians of Legacy (十二福星) features twelve Zodiac Guardians presented as sculptural figures… each with varying:
forms
poses
scales
And yes,… the lead Guardian stands over 7 feet tall, making it an instant must-see photo spot.
Javier shared that what inspired him most about the Cloth Tiger was how personal it is:
“No two are ever made the same… each one carries different motifs and well wishes, shaped by a parent’s hopes for their child.”
That idea of personalised care became the heart of the installation. Over time, Cloth Tigers evolved into cloth animals representing each child… similar to how our Chinese Zodiac becomes a lifelong guardian.
And that’s what makes this installation feel so emotionally grounded: it’s not just art for aesthetics… it’s art that carries meaning.
Blessings Parade (接福 · 传福): A Celebration Beyond the Laneway
As part of Guardians of Legacy (十二福星), Kwai Chai Hong is also bringing the spirit of the installation into the streets with the Blessings Parade (接福 · 传福).
Inspired by the Cloth Tiger tradition, the parade invites the community to:
✨ receive blessings ✨ pass them on ✨ continue the cycle of care across generations
It’s a reminder that blessings aren’t meant to be kept, they’re meant to be shared.
