16 Places You Shouldn’t Miss When Visiting Kelantan… From Local Food to Cultural Gems

Whenever people talk about Kelantan, the first things that usually come to mind are nasi kerabu, nasi dagang, traditional kuih and the state’s rich Malay culture. But to be honest… there is so much more to discover in this charming corner of Malaysia!

I love exploring places that offer a little bit of everything, from hunting for good food and discovering local hidden gems to learning about heritage and finding interesting spots for photos. Kelantan is perfect for this kind of adventure because it combines traditional charm with a growing variety of food spots, creative spaces and attractions.

During my Kelantan adventures, I came across these 16 places that deserve a spot on your travel itinerary. Whether you are planning a weekend getaway, a foodie trip or a cultural exploration, here are some places to check out when visiting Kelantan.

1. Runway 10 Steak & Coffee

If you are looking for somewhere to satisfy your Western food cravings while exploring Kelantan, put Runway 10 Steak & Coffee on your list.

I always enjoy discovering eateries beyond the usual local food spots when travelling. It gives me an opportunity to experience a different side of the local dining scene. Whether you are planning a meal with friends or simply taking a break between sightseeing stops, this is one place to consider adding to your food-hunting itinerary.

2. Pok Loh Milo Tunggeng

Calling all Milo lovers! If you enjoy a rich chocolatey drink, Pok Loh Milo Tunggeng is one name to look out for when exploring Kota Bharu.

Kelantan has plenty of interesting local food and drink stops, and trying something popular with the locals is always part of the fun. After all, a food trip is not complete without sampling a few drinks and snacks along the way!

3. Laman Warisan Seni Kampung Laut

One of the things I appreciate about travelling around Malaysia is discovering places that preserve our traditional architecture, craftsmanship and cultural heritage.

Laman Warisan Seni Kampung Laut is worth considering if you want to explore the heritage and artistic side of Kelantan. It offers a different experience from visiting shopping malls or cafés and gives you an opportunity to appreciate the traditions that make each Malaysian state unique.

Remember to bring your camera along because heritage locations can also make lovely backdrops for travel photography.

4. Galeri Wau Pak Sapie & Sons

Did you know that the traditional wau is an important part of Kelantan’s cultural identity?

At Galeri Wau Pak Sapie & Sons, visitors can discover the artistry associated with traditional Malaysian kites. The intricate designs, colourful patterns and craftsmanship make the wau fascinating to look at.

I think attractions like this are especially meaningful because they help preserve traditional skills and introduce younger generations to our cultural heritage. If you enjoy arts, crafts and discovering local traditions, this is one to include in your itinerary.

5. Pasar Gok Kapor

Now, this is where my foodie side comes out!

Pasar Gok Kapor is one of the places I would recommend checking out when exploring Kelantan’s local food scene. Markets are always exciting because you never quite know what delicious treats you might discover.

One of my personal favourites here is the pulut ayam goreng Hatyai. The combination of sticky rice and crispy fried chicken makes it a satisfying treat, especially if you enjoy savoury snacks.

For me, visiting local markets is one of the best ways to experience the everyday food culture of a destination. Go with an appetite because you will probably want to try more than one thing!

6. Warung Pak Mat Pulau Pisang

No Malaysian road trip is complete without stopping at a local warung for a good meal.

Warung Pak Mat Pulau Pisang is another place to add to your Kelantan food-hunting list. I always enjoy exploring local eateries because they offer a different experience from dining at a hotel or a restaurant in a shopping mall.

If you are planning a food-focused trip around Kelantan, keep this stop on your radar and check the latest opening hours before heading over.

7. Street Art Kota Bharu

Who says sightseeing has to involve museums and historical buildings?

Take some time to explore the street art around Kota Bharu and discover a more creative side of the city. Street art adds colour and character to urban spaces, and it is always fun to see how artists use walls and public areas to express ideas and tell stories.

This is also a good opportunity to capture some travel photos for your Instagram feed. I would suggest keeping your eyes open as you walk around because sometimes the most interesting discoveries happen when you slow down and explore the surrounding streets.

8. Muzium DiRaja Istana Batu

If you are interested in royal history, make time for Muzium DiRaja Istana Batu.

The former royal residence offers visitors a glimpse into Kelantan’s royal heritage and history. Museums like this provide a deeper understanding of the people, traditions and historical events that have shaped a destination.

I believe travelling is not just about eating good food and taking beautiful pictures. Learning about the places we visit makes the experience more meaningful, too.

If you enjoy heritage attractions, this is worth adding to your Kota Bharu itinerary.

9. Bank Kerapu

History lovers should also consider visiting Bank Kerapu, a historic building in Kota Bharu that houses the War Museum.

The building is associated with Kelantan’s wartime history, including the Japanese invasion of Malaya during World War II. Visiting historical sites like this helps us understand the events that shaped the country and reminds us of the importance of preserving these stories for future generations.

This is a different kind of attraction from the usual foodie stop, but it adds depth to your trip and gives you a better appreciation of Kelantan’s historical significance.

10. Beach Boy Street

When exploring a destination, I always like leaving a little room in my itinerary for places that are different from the usual tourist attractions.

Beach Boy Street is another spot to check out during your Kelantan adventure. Depending on your interests and the activities available when you visit, you can explore the area and see what catches your eye.

As with any lesser-known stop, I recommend checking its exact location and current activities before making a special trip.

11. Nasi Berlauk Kak Chik

If you want to experience Kelantan through its food, nasi berlauk is something you should not miss.

Nasi berlauk is a familiar local meal featuring rice served with lauk, or accompanying dishes, often with a delicious gravy that brings everything together. It is the kind of food that makes you understand why local cuisine is such an important part of travelling in Malaysia.

Nasi Berlauk Kak Chik is one place to add to your food itinerary when you are craving a proper local meal.

My advice? Do not leave Kelantan without trying its traditional rice dishes. They are an essential part of the local food experience!

12. Locong Tapang

Another stop for those who enjoy exploring local food is Locong Tapang.

I love the idea of building a travel itinerary around food because every stop gives you another opportunity to discover something new. Instead of sticking only to familiar restaurants, try exploring local eateries and asking about their specialities.

If you are visiting Locong Tapang, check the latest details and available offerings before your visit so you know what to expect.

13. Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah

No visit to Kota Bharu would feel complete without exploring the famous Pasar Besar Siti Khadijah.

This bustling market is one of Kelantan’s best-known landmarks and a wonderful place to experience the local way of life. You can explore stalls selling fresh produce, local ingredients, traditional snacks and a variety of everyday goods.

The market is particularly interesting for travellers who enjoy discovering regional food and local products. It is also a great place to observe the lively atmosphere of a traditional Malaysian market.

My tip is to arrive with enough time to wander around instead of rushing through. Take in the sights, browse the stalls and see what catches your attention. If you plan to buy food or souvenirs, bring some cash as a backup and check the prices before purchasing.

And, of course, remember to be respectful when taking photographs of vendors and shoppers.

14. LePark Kampung

For a change of pace, consider adding LePark Kampung to your Kelantan itinerary.

One thing I enjoy about travelling is mixing busy sightseeing days with more relaxed stops. After walking around markets, exploring heritage attractions and hunting for food, it is nice to have somewhere different to visit before moving on to the next destination.

Check the latest information about the venue and its available activities before visiting, especially if you are travelling with family or friends.

15. Gelanggang Seni

If you want to appreciate Kelantan beyond its food, Gelanggang Seni is another cultural attraction to look out for.

Kelantan has a rich tradition of performing arts, music, dance and craftsmanship. Cultural spaces such as Gelanggang Seni help introduce visitors to the traditional arts that are part of the state’s identity.

Depending on the programme and schedule, visitors may have opportunities to learn about traditional performances and artistic practices.

My suggestion is to check the latest programme before visiting, as performances and activities may vary. If you are lucky enough to catch a cultural presentation, it could become one of the more memorable parts of your trip.

16. Holiday Villa Kota Bharu

After a full day of exploring, eating and walking around, you will definitely appreciate having a comfortable place to return to.

Holiday Villa Kota Bharu is one accommodation option to consider when planning your stay. Choosing a convenient hotel can make a difference to your travel experience, particularly when you have several attractions and food stops to cover.

I usually prefer planning my accommodation around the places I want to visit so I can make the most of my time without spending too much of the day travelling between stops.

Before booking, check the room options, current rates, facilities and location to see whether they suit your travel plans.

Final Thoughts… Why Kelantan Deserves a Spot on Your Travel List

For me, the beauty of exploring Kelantan lies in its variety. One moment, you could be enjoying a plate of local food; the next, you could be discovering traditional craftsmanship, learning about royal history or wandering through a bustling market.

These 16 places offer a starting point for discovering different sides of Kelantan, from its food culture and creative spaces to its historical attractions and accommodation options.

Of course, you do not have to visit all 16 places in one trip. If you have a weekend, choose the spots that interest you most and plan your route according to their locations and opening hours. If you have more time, you can take things slowly and explore beyond Kota Bharu, too.

My personal highlight? Pasar Gok Kapor and its pulut ayam goreng Hatyai are definitely on my foodie radar!

Kelantan has so much character, and I think there is always something new to discover whenever we travel around our own country.

So, tell me… which of these places would you visit first? Are you team foodie, team heritage or team explore-everything?

Until the next adventure, happy exploring!
