Hotel Review 2022 – The LUMA Hotel, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah

Everyone that has been to Sabah knows that Sabah is a gorgeous state in Malaysia blessed with mother nature’s abundant gifts – from deep green rainforest to world-class islands with pristine white sandy beaches….

And with so much to enjoy and discover in Sabah, the LUMA Hotel created a “second home” for you while exploring the “Land Below The Wind”.…

The LUMA Hotel is the very first of the Design brand of hotels under the Marriott Bonvoy group in Kota Kinabalu

The hotel’s name is originated from one of the local ethnics (Bajau) in Sabah word, which means ‘home’ in English.

Step foot inside the LUMA is like stepping foot into a beautiful tropical paradise that echoes Sabah’s stunning natural tropical beauty from the mesmerising spiral staircase that mimics a flowing waterfall accompanied by hanging plants on the ceiling and wall that will remind guests of the enchanting tropical rainforests in Sabah…. Even the pathway evokes images of small stones and shells on the sandy beach and the LUMA’s spacious bedrooms comes with soothing green hues that are just so relaxing and calming like how you would feel in the rainforest….

My room at the LUMA was the Emerald Original Room or their Deluxe room which was 38sq feet in size and came with all the comfort amenities you get from any fine hotels…

You get fine Sabah tea from the highlands in Kundasang /Ranau and also fine coffee from Crack Inc, Sabah’s First & Leading Specialty Coffee Roasters.

And the bathroom can rival any 5 star hotel’s bathroom with a beautiful bathtub

They have rooms suitable for just everyone even if you are there for a honeymoon in which the Palm Marvelous or Honeymoon suite

if you are there with your family, the Eden Family Room be a great choice…

Even the beautiful logo is a fusion between the Rafflesia and Coelogyne Papillosa (white orchid) which can be found on the highest mountain in South East Asia – Mount Kinabalu, Sabah’s pride….

The LUMA Hotel is more then just a hotel… it supports local youths by providing career opportunities, promote local cultures and arts through it’s eclectic furnishings which are all locally made from local Sabahan artisans and they showcase local produce with farm-to-table concept at the two inhouse restaurants….

Flow Coffee, which is a modern chic cafe that serves the best tasting coffee sourced across continents and roasted carefully in the heart of Sabah. Their coffee / fusion – coffee drinks and mocktails / cocktails are all designed and brewed with passion to provide you with the best tasting experience ever.

I just loved their Honey Comb coffee that is served with honey comb dalgona crumbs that is such a treat to my senses…

Then there is the Jojo Gastrobar, a refined Asian Gastrobar located in the heart of Kota Kinabalu, that comes with classy amber-colored interior design and vibrant lighting, with a touch of rustic….

One can immerse oneself in a diverse fusion of food, complemented by a wide assortment of drinks catering to fun cocktail drinkers, sake lovers and fine wine tasters!

A basic and simple buffet breakfast is served here in the mornings from 7am to 10am

The LUMA also contributes to environmental protection through various hotel programs and takes great efforts and care to offer Eco-friendly facilities, amenities and toiletries… and this would be because the team rightly believe that to love Sabah (or your own country) would be to protect our environment from pollution…

As mentioned, the LUMA offers eco-friendly amenities such as bamboo toothbrushes made of natural material that comes straight from the bamboo plant – unlike man-made plastic toothbrush, the bamboo toothbrush reduces environmental pollution and plastic waste in our oceans….

Then their gargle cups in the bathroom are 100% biodegradable and use 100% natural ingredients. BPA-free bamboo fibre is used as its main ingredient and waste coffee grounds are added as the colouring substance!!! How cool is that… these is just the beginning…

There is a gym but its currently only opening maybe next month or so…

The LUMA Hotel to IMAGO mall (walking distance about 5 min) and plenty of eateries…I love Kopi Ping kopitiam which is like just 2 shops away

Standard check-in time at the LUMA Hotel is at 3pm. Check out at 12pm
