For my recent trip back to my hometown, the place where I was born, I stayed at Royale Chulan Penang…

This charming hotel offers guests the best of both worlds… Which would be the charming history of days gone by and modern comfort, some luxury and friendly service…
What I like best about the Royale Chulan Penang would be that it is tucked in the most convenient place and you can explore the streets and lanes nearby which are all rich with Georgetown’s history, some of which had been inducted into the UNESCO World Heritage List of Cities and Sites in 2008…

The Boustead Building, which is a huge part of the Royale Chulan itself was built in 1892… The building is a remnant of a merchant warehouse that was once occupied by Boustead & Co and is now used as the Sri Tanjung Cafe, the Tea Room and several function rooms…

Interpretive displays on both sides of Boustead Heritage Tunnel gives a historical background of this lovely heritage building.
The other part of Royale Chulan Penang is more recently built….

The hotel’s main entrance is a little unique as it faces a small courtyard between Weld Quay and Beach Street (Lebuh Pantai) (and right behind the Penang General Post Office), and this also means that the lobby is slightly hidden away, and not visible from the main road…

Checking in was a breeze as we checked in on a weekday… The receptionist was friendly and professional and the Concierge friendly and accommodative…
The Royale Chulan Penang building has 5 floors including an attic level, houses 179 hotel rooms of various categories… If you are lucky to check into the upper floor rooms, you can enjoy some scenic views of the Penang Strait.
Royale Chulan Penang hotel is also very strategically located in the city’s business district with government offices as well as dining, retail and entertainment outlets just a short walk or drive away… My bestie and I walked and explored the area on foot, marvelling at how convenient it is to go anywhere….

We checked in into one of the Deluxe Twin Rooms which was definitely super comfy that came with a small balcony overlooking the pool area and the room came with all the amenities you find at any hotel… There are connecting rooms available here too….
The hotel provides high-speed Internet connection in the rooms and all common areas….

The attached bathroom has distinct sections for the sink, shower and toilet… Bathtubs are only available in suite room categories…. Other then that, there’s the hair dryer and essential toiletries….

The swimming pool is located on a raised wooden deck on Level 2. The pool is decently sized for a hotel located in the heart of Georgetown…
There is a fitness center which is equipped with around a dozen pieces of exercise equipment… And which access requires the hotel keycard and a passcode, which are given to guests upon check-in…

The Tea Room is an English-style tea house has wood flooring and a posh appearance reminiscent of the colonial past… Here you can choose to indulge in some choice TWG Tea served here… A very affordable and simple but delicious English Afternoon Tea, is also offered from 2:00pm to 5:00pm daily for just RM60 for 2 pax…

Sri Tanjung Cafe, the hotel’s main restaurant is where breakfasts is being served.. The hotel offers a semi buffet on normal weekdays and full buffet spread on weekends and eves of public holidays when the hotel is more fully occupied… The all-day menu has a variety of local and Western dishes. There is an affordable range of set lunch and dinner available for as low as RM10 and it is truly delicious too!!!!

We only manage to take a peek at the Penang Suite, which is a unique room where the king-size bed has been strategically positioned to face the mesmerizing view of the docks and sea at the hotel’s Attic level…

It is probably a real treat waking up to the morning sun’s first rays pouring into the room or watching the lights of the boats and busy dock twinkle at night in this room… but the bathroom also comes with a bathtub.. Heheh
As mentioned above, do take the chance to explore Georgetown from the hotel at your leisure. I definitely had an amazing time rediscovering the city I was born in… With the many unique historical and architectural buildings blending with newer and much more modern buildings.

We supposed to check in at 3pm. But room is not ready as at 5.50pm on 2/5/22. Reason , there is shortage of worker to clean, which is hotels responsibility. As a tired guess, room must be ready for the the money they collect. Shame on their service.

Checked in 30th July, checked out 3rd August 2022.
We had a speedy/early checked in n room was available. Room was spacious, clean, amenities are generous with good bath linens and king size bed with a 2 setter sofa facing the harbour. Staffs were friendly, especially the front office Manager. She was very helpful from day one for all our needs. We were given free 2 pax for 2 mornings breakfast at the hotel. There were good varieties n very satisfactory. Anyway a recommended food court is just in front of hotel entrance.
We will definitely come back to stay. Do keep up the good work and see you soon. Tq
